THE numerous flower markets around Shenzhen opened Sunday, attracting residents shopping for one of the Spring Festival necessities.

Flowers and potted citrus trees have long been must-have items for Guangdong residents during the Spring Festival as they are believed to symbolize fortune and blessings.

Each district or new area has a major flower market, and about 200 smaller flower markets have also opened, according to the Municipal Urban Administration Bureau. Longhua District has six large flower markets in six subdistricts, offering 672 booths, the largest number among all districts and new areas in the city.

Scattering the flower markets around the different areas of the city makes it more convenient for residents to purchase flowers for the Spring Festival, Yu Yang, a supervisor of the bureau, told the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily.

Yu also urged residents to recycle unwanted flower pots after the holiday. At the flower market in Huanggang, Futian District, information is being distributed to buyers on how to recycle the flower pots by pick-up appointment or at a recycling station.

In Pingshan, residents can put their unwanted pots at 38 temporary stations designated by the district urban administration bureau. Residents can also use an official WeChat account to make an appointment for a government-approved recycling company to collect unwanted pots.

According to the bureau, about 850,000 flower pots were recycled after the 2016 Spring Festival, and the number reached 1.82 million last year. In addition to saving landfill capacity, the recycling efforts in the past two years led to around 559,000 flower pots being reused and about 60,000 flowers being replanted.
