SHENZHEN Medical Emergency Center has installed 20 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at Shenzhen Railway Station, sources from the railway station said Saturday.
Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death and an AED is the only effective treatment for restoring a regular heartbeat during an episode of sudden cardiac arrest.
According to a plan laid out by the Shenzhen Health and Family Planning Commission, the city will spend 10 million yuan (US$1.58 million) purchasing 500 AEDs this year and installing them in public places to provide timely treatment for people who suffer sudden cardiac arrest in public.
The health commission will purchase 5,000 AEDs over the 13th Five-Year Plan period, or by 2020. The AEDs will be gradually put into use in public places such as the airport, ferry piers, railway stations and Metro stations, while 50,000 people will be trained in first aid and the use of AEDs.
