THE government plans to build an 11.5-km underground "express passage" linking Meilin Checkpoint with the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway as part of the renovation project of Huanggang Road.
The transport commission is seeking opinions on the renovation project, which aims to ease congestion around Meilin Checkpoint and on Huanggang Road, and cut the travel time between Futian and Longhua.
The underground link, with four lanes in two directions beneath Huanggang Road, will have ramps to Nanping Expressway, Beihuan Boulevard, Shennan Boulevard and Binhe Boulevard.
The Huanggang Road renovation project will also include the upgrade of the flyovers at Huanggang Road's intersections with Beihuan Boulevard, Sungang Road and Hongli Road, and the construction of a new east-west overpass for Zhenhua Road. The overpass upgrade is aimed at increasing traffic speed at these junctures.
Longhua has been plagued by inadequate transport links with other parts of the city. This will change with the completion of the 11 Metro lines that are planned to connect the district, some of which are currently under construction.
In another development, the tunnel project of the Pingshan-Yantian Passage has been carried out smoothly and is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
The 11.25-km passage will have six lanes in two directions with a designed speed of 80 kmph.
