Warm winter expected

2017-11-09

TUESDAY was the beginning of the solar term of Lidong according to the traditional Chinese calendar, which means the beginning of winter. However, the warm weather in the city did not show any signs of winter. Shenzhen is expecting to have a warm winter this year, according to the city's weather experts.

According to the meteorological bureau, the city's temperatures in the next three days will climb slightly to 28 degrees Celsius. There will also be some cloudy weather with showers in the following days.

The warm winter is not unique to Shenzhen as many places in northern China also recorded a warm Lidong day Tuesday.

The World Meteorological Organization released a report on the same day, indicating that the world's average temperature from January to September this year had risen by 1.1 degrees Celsius from the pre-industrialization period. It has also been pointed out that the five-year period from 2013 to 2017 will be the warmest period worldwide ever recorded.

In Shenzhen, although the average temperature over the past five years was hardly higher than the 1998-2002 period, the weather has been getting warmer over the past five years, with 2015 recorded as the warmest year with an average temperature of 23.9 degrees Celsius.

Records show that Shenzhen has been getting warmer and warmer, as each of its warmest 10 years occurred after 1990 since 1953 when the city has recorded history of its weather.

An expert from the local meteorological bureau suggested that three main factors might cause the climate to warm. First of all, the whole world is undergoing a warming trend. Human activities and urbanization around the world are also impacting the climate.
