SEZ sets good example: Congo president

2010-08-25

Denis Sassou-Nguesso

THE development of Shenzhen over the past 30 years had set a good example for developing countries, and provided an ideal example for African countries, according Denis Sassou-Nguesso, president of the Republic of Congo.

Sassou-Nguesso made the remarks in an interview on Shenzhen Television.

"Shenzhen had changed greatly in 30 years, its development and growth proved the wisdom of Chinese leaders in reform and opening up," said Sassou-Nguesso on a visit to Shenzhen after visiting the World Expo in Shanghai.

Sassou-Nguesso recalled a talk with late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, in 1987.

"Deng said China would be the world's fourth or the fifth economy in 2025 if the country continued its opening-up policy. But now, in 2010, China is the world's No. 2 economy," he said.

"From a small town to a well-balanced metropolis in urban design, economy and social development, Shenzhen has set an example for us."

Sassou-Nguesso visited China in 1980 as president of the Republic of Congo and has visited Shenzhen twice since 2005.

"I actually visited China in 1964, the year China and Congo established diplomatic relations. Shenzhen had experienced big changes in the previous five years with its expressway and Metro construction," he said.

"I hope Shenzhen will attain more success on its road of reform. Undoubtedly, Shenzhen will become more prosperous in the coming years," he added.
