SOME construction materials retailers in Shenzhen promised Saturday that they will allow consumers to return goods within 15 days without providing reasons.

They made the promise at a ceremony held by the Shenzhen Consumer Council and the city's home decor suppliers' association to mark World Consumer Rights Day, which falls today.

A marketing official from Dongpeng Ceramic Co. Ltd., one of the 10 retailers that made the promise, said the company would strictly follow national and industry standards and would not sell any fake or shoddy products. Consumers can return products within 15 days without offering any reasons as long as the goods are not opened, smeared or affected by water, according to the official, who was not named in yesterday's Shenzhen Special Zone Daily.

The city's home decoration industry has seen a rapid growth in recent years with the number of suppliers exceeding 100,000. As a result, the number of complaints related to the quality of products has also soared. In response to the suppliers' association's call to protect consumers' rights, the 10 retailers signed letters of service guarantee at Saturday's ceremony.

They also vowed to publicize standards for charging fees and make known their hotline numbers for inquiries and complaints.

Also on Saturday, the city's market supervision administration gave a standardized contract to representatives of home decor companies. With the contract in hand, consumers can sue home decor retailers if they find the products purchased don't live up to their description.
