Flea market held for charity

2010-03-05

Books on sale at the flee market at Shenzhen Foreign Languages School on Thursday.

ABOUT 1,000 students from Shenzhen Foreign Languages School in Futian District held a flea market at the school Thursday. All the income will be donated to charity.

The annual flea market was conducted by the students' union and participants were Junior One and Two students. They had to speak English while buying and selling, said Xie Zhiguang, a school official.

Each class had a booth and goods on sale were donated by students. They included used books, toys and new stationery. Each student had to provide at least one item for the booth, said Xie.

All the money made by the students will be donated to the Shenzhen Youth Development Fund. The total amount will be announced Monday.

"It is an annual event at school, providing an opportunity for students to participate in social activities and charity work while practicing English," said Xie.

Among the goods priced from one to hundreds of yuan, books were the most popular, particularly novels and comics, said Yan Xiaofo, a Junior Two student.

A charity auction at the market knocked down cameras and calligraphic works, among other things, which were also donated by students.
