Volunteers recruited to teach in Gansu

2009-07-03

SHENZHEN is recruiting 10 volunteers to teach in quake areas in Gansu from August to January.

The applicants should be Shenzhen residents aged 20 to 45 with teaching experience and skills, said Liu Yan, secretary of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, at a press conference Thursday.

They will work in primary and middle schools in Longnan, one of the quake-affected areas the Central Government has designated Shenzhen to help.

The half-year program is funded by the Shenzhen Youth Development Foundation and sponsored by Bank of China's Shenzhen branch.

"All Shenzhen residents with bachelor's degrees and teaching experience can apply to the program through www.szyouth.cn or www.sva.org.cn," Liu said.

The volunteers will be paid 1,000 yuan (US$146) a month to cover their living expenses in Longnan and 1,500 yuan as a travel subsidy for the half year.

The bank donated 1.2 million yuan Thursday to support the volunteer program, which is expected to be long-term and help improve the level of education in Longnan.

Shenzhen education authorities previously sent a group of 80 teachers to Longnan in January, and they are expected to return in August.
