For the physical well-being of all residents, Shenzhen is making great efforts to expand the city's sports infrastructure, advocating citywide bodybuilding campaign, and improving the city's system of public hygiene.
Sports
Shenzhen has witnessed vigorous development of mass sports. In 2006, a sports campaign was launched across the whole city, which resulted in 41 percent of Shenzhen's population engaged in sports. Of the adult population, 18.7 percent participate in sports activities three times or more every week. More than 48 percent of the adult population enjoy good health.
Sports Venues
The city's operating sports venues cover an area of more than 12 million square meters. The area for residents' sports facilities totals about 4 million square meters.
Shenzhen Sports Center Situated in Futian District, the Shenzhen Sports Center covers an area of 278,000 square meters. In 1985, the 6,500-seat Shenzhen Gymnasium with a floor space of 21,200 square meters was built. In 1991, the Shenzhen Stadium, which has 30,000 seats and covers an area of 411,690 square meters, was built. In October 2002, the Shenzhen Swimming and Diving Natatorium was built, which covers an area of 54,300 square meters and has more than 4,000 seats.
In December 2002, the 11th Guangdong Provincial Sports Meet was held at the Shenzhen Sports Center.
Luohu Gymnasium Located in Luohu District and built in October 2002, the Luohu Gymnasium covers an area of 12,502 square meters and has 3,000 seats. It is one of the venues for important competitions of 11th Guangdong Provincial Sports Meet.
Bao'an Gymnasium Located in the new central area of Bao'an District, the Bao'an Gymnasium was built in September 2002. It has a floor space of 47,400 square meters and can accommodate 8,800 spectators. The closing ceremony of the 11th Guangdong Provincial Sports Meet was held here.
Longgang International Cycling Ground Located in Longgang District, the ground serves as the country's first standard international wooden-track arena that can hold track, road and mountain biking competitions simultaneously. In 2001, the cycling competitions of the Ninth National Games were held here.
Winning the Bid to Host the 26th Universiade
In July 2004, Shenzhen started its official bid application to host the 26th Universiade in 2011. The International University Sports Federation named Shenzhen the host city of the 2011 Summer Universiade in Turin, Italy on January 16, 2007, making Shenzhen the youngest city to host the event in Universiade history. After that, Shenzhen quickly started all kinds of preparatory work for the Universiade.
Public Health
Shenzhen has been actively improving its public health system and the disease prevention and control system. The hygienic standards of food, environment and schools have are very high.
In 2006, the city's medical and health services were improved. By the end of that year, Shenzhen had 1,692 medical institutions, of which 99 were hospitals. The medical institutions had 17,553 beds, an increase of 729 beds over the previous year. There were 42,400 medical personnel. The city's more than 400 community clinics are scattered across the whole city. Residents can get medical service from the nearest medical institutions within 10- to 15-minute walk.

Shenzhen People's Hospital Located in Luohu District, it was former Bao'an County People's Hospital and has now developed into a modern comprehensive hospital with multiple functions, advanced equipment, experienced professionals.
Shenzhen Second People's Hospital It was the former Shenzhen Red Cross Hospital. As one of the city's two big comprehensive hospitals, it has 1,100 beds and 29 ward sections.
Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital It was the former Shenzhen Central Hospital. A big modern comprehensive hospital invested by the Shenzhen Municipal Government, it has been incorporated into the medical management of Beijing University. It is also the clinical, teaching and research base of Shenzhen, Beijing University, and the Medical Center of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Shenzhen Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital Built in 1975, the hospital has developed into a comprehensive traditional Chinese medicine hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching, disease prevention and rehabilitation.
Food Safety
The Shenzhen Municipal Government has attached great importance to food safety. In 2006, the city's sample tests of principal foods showed better results. The supervision of foods has been improved, and the safety of principal foods concerning people's lives has been ensured No major food poisoning cases occurred throughout the year. In 2007, the city government will invest 160 million yuan to ensure food safety. The investment will mainly go to the upgrading of food safety monitoring devices and the construction of production bases of live pigs and vegetables.
