Shenzhen has set up a comprehensive public health network, which features city-level, district-level and community-level public health institutions. By the end of 2008, the city had a total of 2,440 medical institutions (including 634 community health centers), with nearly 20,000 beds and 63,500 medical personnel.

Shenzhen People's Hospital
Built in 1946, the hospital, Shenzhen's largest, originated from Bao'an County People's Hospital and has developed into a modern comprehensive hospital that combines medical service, teaching, scientific research and health care. It features complete functions, advanced equipment, rational talent structure and strong technical power.
Shenzhen No. 2 People's Hospital
With 1,008 in-patient beds, the hospital is equipped with high-tech equipment like MRI, DSA, spiral CT and color ultrasonic, some of which are the most advanced in the world. Among the city's hospitals, it has the largest number of key and specialized medical units.
Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital
This modern, comprehensive hospital was built by the Shenzhen Municipal Government with an investment of 450 million yuan in co-operation with Beijing University. Within the management network of the hospitals attached to Beijing University, it is one of the most influential medical institutions in Shenzhen.
Shenzhen Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital
A large-scale comprehensive hospital of traditional Chinese medicine, it combines medical service, teaching, scientific research, disease prevention, health care and medical rehabilitation. It is the only national and provincial demonstration hospital of traditional Chinese medicine and the only national three-A hospital of traditional Chinese medicine in Shenzhen. In 2009, it was awarded the title of "Famed Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital in Guangdong" by the Guangdong Provincial Government.
Food Safety
In recent years, the Shenzhen Municipal Government has upgraded its food safety monitoring system. The food safety level has seen great improvement and residents have felt a stronger sense of safety in their food consumption. By the end of 2008, 93.2 percent of the sampled food of the city's registered food producers had reached the qualifying standard, 9.1 percent higher than in 2005. The city's food and drink industry and all public canteens have adopted the classified management system of food safety. The Shenzhen Municipal Government has formulated a three-year food safety plan (2009-2011) in an effort to forge a "safety network" from food source to distribution to consumption.
Occupational Disease Prevention and Treatment
The city is carrying out a campaign to prevent the spread of occupational diseases among certain industries and groups that are prone to the diseases. The campaign is also cracking down on illegal operations that seriously damage the health of employees. The city is also conducting a pilot project of the basic occupational health in the city's industry zones and widely offering occupational health services to give every employee access. |
