Four pillar industries in Shenzhen

High-tech

Since 1990s, Shenzhen greatly developed high-tech industry, and currently it has become one of the zones in China in which there are the most advanced and integrated high-tech industries. In 2004, the output value of high-tech products was 326.652 billion yuan, and when calculated according to the current price, it was increased by 31.6% than the previous, and the output value of high-tech products with individual intellectual property rights was 185,309 billion yuan, which was increased by 33.4%, accounting for 56.7% of the total amount of all the high-tech products. And in particular, the electronic information industry has the leading advantages, and the main products, such as computer software and hardware, program controlled exchanges, and access network equipment share a large market share in Mainland, China.

To promote Sino-foreign economic and technological cooperation, China High-Tech Fair has been held in every October in Shenzhen since 1999. The High-Tech Fair has become one of the important windows for China's high-tech sector to the outside. And Shenzhen has become the production, research and trade center of high-tech products in the country.

Modern logistics

Shenzhen is the only city in China which has marine, land and air ports. Currently 12 ports of various types have been established to the world, and in 2004, the person-time for exit and entry of the ports reached 150,000,000, and the vehicle-time of exit and entry of ports was 13,360,000.
  
Shenzhen has the east and the west port zone, and has 53 wharf berths with a capacity of over ten thousand tons, and opened 106 international container liner routes, and formed an international container liner network basing on Shenzhen as the hub and covering main ports in world 12 navigating zones.

In 2004, Shenzhen ranked the 4th largest port in the world, and the throughput of port goods exceeded 135,000,000 tons, and the throughput of containers was up to 13,659,000 standard containers.

Shenzhen BaoAn International Airport is the 4th largest airport in China, and currently it has opened 95 domestic flight courses and 14 international flight courses. In 2004, the transportation number of passengers in Shenzhen Airport was 14,244,500, and the throughput of transportation of airport goods was 495,400 tons.

Shenzhen has advanced roads, expressways and railways, and the length of road is 1,800km, and the length of expressways is 200km, and the density of road network is up to 0.75km/km2. Within 90 minutes' drive, the airports in Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Macao and Zhuanhai can be reached, and Shenzhen is the exchange of Jingguang, Jingjiu and Guangjiu railway, and the expressways connect to Hong Kong and main cities in Pearl River Delta in Guangdong.

Stage I of Shenzhen Metro was completed and put into operation by the end of 2004. And Line No. 4 of Shenzhen Metro is currently under construction by Shenzhen and Hong Kong, and will be connected to Hong Kong Metro network in 2008. The west access engineering of Shenzhen and Hong Kong will also be completed and put into operation in July of 2006.

Modern finance

Shenzhen has set up sound and complete modern financial system with banking, securities and insurance as the main businesses, together with other financial institutions

Shenzhen is the birthplace for the first foreign-invested bank, the first joint stock insurance company, the first securities company, the first foreign exchange regulation center, the first Sino-foreign financial company, and the first electronic financial settlement center in China.

All the domestic financial institutions have set up branches in Shenzhen, and Shenzhen is a city in which the domestic banks have set up the most networks with the most complete coverage. Over 50 foreign-invested financial institutions have set up branches in Shenzhen, and the distribution density of financial institutions in Shenzhen is leading in China. 80% of the current funds of Shenzhen enterprises come from bank loans, and 36% of the basic enterprise construction fund comes from bank loans, and the fund invested by banks accounts for 56% of all the construction funds. By the end of 2004, the balance of RMB deposits in domestic financial institutions in the city was 710.075 billion yuan, and the amount of loans in domestic financial institutions in the city was 524.277 yuan, and the accumulated cash expenditure in the year was 1,121.088 billion yuan, and the accumulated amount of cash income was 1,023.673 billion yuan.

One of the two stock exchanges in China is located in Shenzhen. By the end of 2004, there were 536 companies listed in Shenzhen Stock Exchange, and 578 stocks were listed, and the total sum of capital stock was 200,447 billion stocks, and the total market value of the listed companies was 1,104.123 billion yuan, and the transaction amount in the securities market in the year was 1,642.053 billion yuan.

 Modern cultural industry

In Shenzhen, a group of cultural industries with obvious and quick benefit, market success and advantages have been set up, including the printing industry, news and publishing industry, broadcasting industry, cultural and recreation industry, cultural and travel industry, advertising industry, and cultural product manufacturing industry.

In 2004, a group of excellent cultural industries stood out as outstanding, and OCT Group Company and Dafeng Village were named by the Ministry of Culture as "Sample Base for Cultural Industry in China"  in the first batch, and only five ones was listed in Guangdong, which shows the strength of the cultural industry in Shenzhen. In November, the first Cultural Industrial Fair was held successfully in Shenzhen, and a platform was set up for the development of the cultural industry in Shenzhen or even in China, and an outstanding cooperation opportunity was created for both domestic and foreign merchants, and also the latest information about the development of the world cultural industry was brought for China.

The development of the cultural industry in Shenzhen will be based on innovative cultural brand as the core, and the technical strength of the cultural industry and the traditional industry will be improved, and the eight advantageous industries will be especially developed, including media industry, publishing industry, creative design industry, printing industry, audio and visual industry, recreation industry and travel industry.
