Its major responsibilities include:
1) to implement national, provincial and municipal statistical regulations, policies and standards; to implement the national statistics reporting and accounting system; to undertake the statistical assignments given by the national, provincial and municipal governments;

2) to formulate local statistical plans and relevant annual programs; to direct and coordinate local statistical work; to formulate local statistical policies, regulations and standards and supervise their implementation;

3) to collect and arrange information of local economic and social development, and to conduct analysis and forecast based on the information; to submit statistics to the municipal party committee, the municipal government and other departments; to conduct major surveys;

4) to collect and arrange basic statistical information of Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and global trends; to conduct analyses and researches on international social and economic development;

5) to release local statistical information; to publish regular statistical reports on local economic and social development;

6) to coordinate and direct other departments in improving local statistical network; to build and manage an automatic statistical system and a statistics database; to cooperate with relevant departments in reviewing the qualification of statistical professionals;

7) to organize researches and exchanges on statistical technologies; to strengthen the cooperation with major Chinese cities; to provide within its given rights statistical information to other countries;

8) to supervise the Shenzhen Investigation Team on Social & Economic Development and the Shenzhen Survey Team for Enterprises;

9) to manage other departments' statistical entries and information to be published;

10) to undertake other assignments given by the municipal party committee, the municipal government and other governing bodies.
