Exhibition “System: Sui Jianguo 2008-2018” at OCAT Shenzhen is the most thorough review of artist Sui Jianguo’s sculptures in the past 10 years. Through exhibiting sculptures, documentaries, prototypes and text materials, the exhibition displays the artist’s shift in creative approaches and how he built his own conceptual system.
In Hall A, giant abstract sculptures form a visual theater with a futuristic feel. The latter half of the hall is divided into four research spaces, each presenting the artist’s creative approaches and conceptual system. In Hall B, more than 1,400 sculpture prototypes on a long table form a central axis. They are arranged in a temporal order beginning with his earliest clay studies, bestowed with remarkable vitality by the creator’s hands.
“A sculpture is a 3-D man-made object. The term ‘man-made object’ implies a means of contact between humans and the world. Since 2008, imitation has no longer been the goal of Sui Jianguo’s creations. He uses such methods as pinching, pulling, pressing, punching, stomping and dropping to present the existence of behavior and action in the sculpting process and thus forms part of the core expressive content to his works. In essence, these behaviors and actions reveal his creative thinking on how ‘objects’ came into shape at the beginning of the world,” said Cui Cancan, curator of the exhibition.
Sui graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1989. His sculptures are ingenious fusions of concept and form, as many of his works utilize large-scale form to impact viewers. His early works carry strong symbolic content, most of which carefully relates the peculiarities of society and history. His later creations began incorporating a bigger visual angle, thus making his concepts of cultural space and time apparent.
